ORAL PRESENTATION
Nursing 402 – Teaching Project/Oral Presentation
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of the assignment is to provide the student the opportunity to summarize in detail the development, implementation, and evaluation of an instructional intervention for a specific patient population or professional group.
Approach to Assignment
When approaching this assignment, I began by performing a needs assessment on my unit to try and find places that could use more education or quality improvement. Once I chose the topic of bedside reporting, I spoke with my manager to set up a time and place for my educational presentation. I then researched bedside hand off reporting in depth and put together a brochure and oral presentation for my educational day.
Reason for Inclusion
I included this paper in my portfolio in order to satisfy the oral presentation requirement for this project. I believe that this project represents my ability to organize, implement and evaluate an oral presentation the best. It involved a lot of planning, research and public speaking skills. This teaching project gave me a chance to reach out to other nurses in my place of work and feel as though I was able to personally make a difference.
Curricular outcomes
Critical thinking
-
Evaluates nursing care outcomes through the acquisition of data and the questioning of inconsistencies.
I use this teaching project to further investigate the effectiveness of bedside reporting. I use data from the Joint Commission and compare this data to the compliance with bedside reporting on my unit. I also note the inconsistencies in bedside reporting on my unit (i.e. some nurses are consistently performing it and some are not) and compare these results to patient satisfaction ratings.
-
Revises actions and goals based on evidence rather than conjecture.
In this paper and in my brochure I discuss my research regarding the effectiveness of bedside reporting and then use this research to persuade my co-workers to revise their actions by being compliant with bedside reporting for every patient. I stress the importance of revising current practice to include bedside reporting in order to meet the national patient safety goals of including patients in their care.
-
Engages in creative problem solving.
Our patient satisfaction scores have been very low for the past several months on our unit. In order to solve this problem, my boss and I discussed ways to improve bedside reporting compliance. If patients feel more involved in their care, then their satisfaction scores should improve. We decided to hold this educational session, hand out brochures and demonstrate the correct and incorrect ways to perform bedside reporting in the hopes of reaching out to the nurses on an emotional level.
Nursing Practice
-
Applies appropriate knowledge of major health problems to guide nursing practice.
This entire project is based on identifying an area of nursing practice that needs improvement in order to improve health and to assist in guiding nursing practices of others through education. I work on a cardiac floor and have a very good understanding of cardiac health problems. One major cause of cardiac issues is stress. Therefore, by incorporating bedside reporting into nursing practice and making patient’s feel more involved in their own care, we can lower their stress levels and improve their cardiac function while in the hospital.
-
Performs direct and indirect therapeutic interventions that incorporate principles of quality management and proper safety techniques based upon assessment findings.
In this project/paper I performed direct interventions by demonstrating to the nurses on my floor how to properly give bedside shift report and then by observing them give a proper bedside report. My boss is now performing bedside reporting audits to ensure compliance with this intervention. I performed indirect interventions by providing the nurses with brochures about bedside reporting to remind them about the safety techniques and need for bedside reporting based on my needs assessment.
-
Establishes and/or utilizes outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care.
After completing my teaching session, I asked each participant to fill out the back of their brochure and state three things that they had learned from my lesson. 100% of the nurses were able to repeat back three things that they had learned. I also had them return demonstrate the proper way to give bedside report and evaluated their performance and gave constructive feedback.
Communication
-
Uses therapeutic communication within the nurse-patient relationship.
The premise of this entire project was to improve therapeutic communication within the nurse-patient relationship through the consistent use of bedside shift reporting. Bedside reporting involves the patient in their own care. It gives the patient and their family time to express any concerns and to add any information they feel is relevant to the report. It is also comforting for them to hear what the off-going nurse says to the on-going nurse for this eradicates patients feeling that nurses are talking about them behind their backs.
-
Adapts communication methods to patients with special needs.
In this project I explain that it is important to be flexible and be able to modify your bedside report so that the patient can understand what you are saying. What is clear to a teenager may not be clear to a patient in their seventies. I express how important it is to be able to speak to all types of people so that they can understand what you are saying without making them feel inadequate.
-
Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups and disciplines using a variety of media in a variety of contexts.
Through the various stages of this project I had to find ways to effectively communicate with my superiors, my peers and my patients. I did this through casual conversation with my boss, research on my own, a speech and teaching session during a unit meeting, a brochure that I created myself and through demonstration of bedside reporting. I adapted the topic to many different methods of communication using a variety of media to support my position.
-
Produces clear, accurate and relevant writing using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
I received a 100% on this project in Nursing 402. I received full credit for the grammar, spelling and punctuation portion of the rubric and was able to effectively communicate my thoughts through my writing to my ODU professor.
-
Accesses and utilizes data and information from a wide range of sources to enhance patient and professional communication.
I used six different peer reviewed and scholarly resources for this paper/project. Prior to writing the paper and designing the teaching experience, I researched my topic thoroughly so that I would have a credible case and be persuasive to my peers. These resources enhanced both my patient communication skills during bedside reporting and my professional communication amongst my peers during the teaching session.
Teaching
-
Provides teaching to patients and/or professionals about health care procedures and technologies in preparation for and following nursing or medical interventions.
This entire project is based upon providing teaching to a set of professionals. I taught my peers at work about the importance of bedside reporting in improving patient’s mental and physical conditions while in the hospital. In doing so, I also educated patient’s to expect nurses to bedside report and to hold them accountable for doing so seeing as this is considered to be a highly effective medical interventions.
-
Evaluates the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities for use in a variety of settings with diverse populations.
I evaluated the effectiveness of bedside reporting by following up with my manager to see how our patient satisfaction scores changed after my teaching sessions. Not only did our patient satisfaction scores improve, but the number of medication and care errors had decreased. My teaching project proved that bedside reporting can have a positive effect on patients and nurses across a broad spectrum and in several different environments.
-
Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to enhance one’s own knowledge base.
At the beginning of this project I did a lot of research on bedside reporting to improve my knowledge base. I used six different scholarly resources on the internet as well as speaking with more experiences nurses and managers to gather information.
Research
-
Differentiates between descriptive nursing literature and published reports of nursing research.
The resources I used for this project were a mixture of descriptive nursing literature and published nursing research. I am aware of how to locate peer-reviewed and scholarly articles on Google as well as on ODU’s library online. I used both of these resources to find the information needed for this paper. My research included research articles as well as descriptive literature from nursing managers who had implemented the same mandate in their own hospitals.
-
Evaluates research that focuses on the efficacy and effectiveness of nursing interventions.
While choosing which research pieces to use for this project I evaluated them for accuracy, trustworthiness and effectiveness. For example, I did not choose articles that were based on opinions. Rather, I choose articles that had solid scientific research backing up their point of views.
-
Shares research findings with colleagues.
I shared my research with my colleagues through my speech and presentation given at my teaching session. I also shared my research by handing out a brochure with some of the information from my teaching presentation on it.
Leadership
-
Organizes, manages and evaluates the development of strategies to promote healthy communities.
For this project I organized the initial teaching session in which all staff nurses on my floor would be educated about the importance and effectiveness of bedside reporting and informed that it will now be mandatory. I managed the initial audits with my boss to ensure that this new mandate was being followed and we have since evaluated the effectiveness of this mandate using these audits as well as our patient satisfaction scores.
Professionalism
-
Demonstrates accountability for one’s own professional practice.
This teaching project gave me a chance to influence the practice of other nurses around me. It also gave me the chance to improve my own practice. I have since started to practice what I preach and I consistently perform bedside reporting while at work. I am accountable for the things that I encourage others to do.
